A unique approach to Zumba Fitness that’s suitable for ALL levels. The classes follow a truly beginner- and injury-friendly format. You don’t need a dance background, and you don’t need to be young, fit or thin (but it’s also OK if you are). All you need is the desire to have fun dancing your way around the world!

This dance workout was created by dancer and choreographer Alberto “Beto” Perez during the 1990s is currently one of the most popular and exciting dancing work outs in the world.

What makes Zumba an effective fat burning workout is its ability to burn 100’s of calories in one session making it ideal for everyone from the busy executives to stay at home mothers.

Zumba ® GOLD is a fun new way to get fit, while learning dance styles from all over the world. Laugh and sweat in our unique beginner-friendly, low impact Zumba Gold classes.

Classes are suitable for women of all ages, backgrounds and fitness levels.

Price is per term and there are 10 classes per term. Classes are available in Sydney at two venues, Chatswood (Mondays) or Rozelle (Thursdays).

Why this will make a difference to your well-being

FUN – it’s a new way to express yourself, giving you plenty of groovy new moves for the dance floor, better rhythm, and inspiring your creativity. Enjoy feeling your body move like never before!

FITNESS – Dancing improves core strength, flexibility and body awareness. Some students find that belly dancing also relieves back pain and period pain, while Zumba is a more cardio form of exercise that can help you lose weight. It is rewarding for people of any age or fitness level.

EXOTIC – the movements and music are entrancing, reflecting their cultural origins, and bringing a touch of exotic spice into your life. You even get to dress up for special events.

MAKE FRIENDS – connect with other women who share the desire to learn to dance!

Besides enjoying yourself for an hour, Zumba Gold / Toning can help you experience better general health and well-being, stronger muscles, improved balance and coordination, and the ability to perform the activities of daily living for a long time to come. If the group or your health requires it, we can exercise sitting down. You still get a great workout and most of the benefits of the regular class. The class is designed with the abilities of each specific group in mind. (Light weights can be used to increase tone and muscle strength.)

What am I going to get from this course?

  • Know how to incorporate Latin dance moves into a fitness class
  • Be able to move faster and in sync with the tempo of the music
  • Feel more confident and enjoy the live classes more

This Zumba course is different because:

  • It’s run as a structured course, so unlike at gyms, you won’t be intimidated in your first class. We start out with lots of repetition, and as the term progresses, we learn more new choreographies and styles one by one. Each class will revise the previous week’s routines, adding new ones when we’re ready for a new challenge.
  • We modify the intensity and movements to suit your fitness level.
  • The teacher is an experienced dance teacher: it won’t feel like an aerobics class.
  • We don’t just use Latin dances, but also Belly dance, Samba, Bollywood, African and more! Classes have included dances from as far afield as Ireland, Serbia, Ghana and Greece. Real choreographies with real cultural zest.
  • They are suitable for absolute beginners, even if you think you have two left feet.
  • High-impact moves like jumping and hopping are avoided, so it’s kind on your joints.

Who is the target audience?

This course is meant for newbies who are not familiar with Zumba classes and/or people that want to improve their technique to have even a better work out and prevent injury.

On the Day

Of course, all our Zumba classes begin with a warm-up and end with a cool-down. In between, you’ll learn simple, fun choreographies from a range of world dance styles such as salsa, merengue, reggae ton, samba and maybe even belly dance. Meanwhile, you’ll improve your co-ordination and understanding of rhythm and music. The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms and resistance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat.

Session length and modules

When should I arrive?

Five to ten minutes before the scheduled class time. Give yourself a realistic amount of time for travel, parking, signing in and getting changed. It’s important to participate in the warm-up to prepare your body for the rest of the class.

How long are the classes?

All classes are fifty-five minutes long, allowing five minutes’ change-over between classes.

Course structure

Classes are run in 10-week terms, aligned with school terms. This structure means that you will learn in a systematic way, with each week building on the knowledge gained in the previous classes. However, we do enough revision that new students can join in at any time.

Group numbers

Small, specialised classes

It’s easy to get started with Rachel’s beginner-friendly approach to dance fitness. Our step-by-step teaching and progressive courses make it easy to learn. Ours are small-scale, boutique classes: unlike at gyms, we don’t pack fifty people into the class. Numbers are capped to make sure everyone can see the instructor and gets individual guidance. Perfect for those who are new to Zumba (or any form of dance or exercise), post pregnancy, or recovering from an injury. Numbers per class range from 10 -24 people.

More

What is Zumba Gold?

Zumba® fitness is a fun dance workout based on spicy Latin and international rhythms. It’s not a dance style; instead, during the class you will experience a range of music and dance styles from all over the world, plus some familiar pop songs too. Experience a taste of salsa, reggae ton, cumbia, Bollywood, samba, African, hip-hop and more!

Zumba Gold class takes this format and makes it lighter, so it suits all levels and ages. We simplify the moves so that it’s easy to follow, take out the jumping and other tricky steps, and offer a range of options so that everyone finds what’s right for them. Soon you’re moving, dancing, laughing, clapping and sweating it out while having a blast.

It is NOT what you see in TV commercials or in videos. It DOES follow the same format of exercising to Latin and other rhythms, but speed and moves are slightly toned-down. These minor changes accommodate the needs of the biggest segment of the population: mature people, those who are injured, pregnant or postnatal, new to exercise or anybody who needs, or simply prefers, a low-impact, easier-to-follow dance exercise class. What is NOT toned-down is the happy atmosphere and the FUN we have every time we get together!

What is Zumba Toning?

Who wouldn’t like to be stronger? In Zumba® Toning, we use light weights to add muscle conditioning to the Zumba class. In our classes, we only use the weights for a short portion of the class – giving you the best mix of toning to firm up your muscles, and pure dancing where you can let loose.

FAQs

Beginner? More mature? Or tried it before and found it too hard?

Don’t worry, we’ll make it easy! Our easy Zumba program is run as a structured course suitable for anyone, even absolute beginners who have no dance experience or don’t exercise much. We take it step by step, so unlike at gyms, you won’t be intimidated in your first class. S

Let’s tackle some common concerns:

Totally unfit? Don’t worry, we will start out with low intensity moves and will always offer options to suit every level. You’ll be shown how to match the moves to your fitness level. Whatever point you are starting at, it’ll do you good!

Too old? Never! Zumba Gold is specifically designed for the mature or special needs participant.

Two left feet? It doesn’t matter! Zumba isn’t about performing or getting it perfect, it’s just a wiggle and a giggle. But don’t be surprised if you find your coordination improving!

Injured? Arthritic? Other health concerns? Injury doesn’t have to mean not exercising at all. There’s a good chance we can accommodate you by offering special variations. Let us know the nature of your injury, and your doctor or physio’s advice. Safe dance is important to us and we always offer low impact options. You can even do it in a chair!

Am I too old/young/overweight/thin/unfit…

You’re ready to start dancing just as you are! Dancers come in all ages, shapes and sizes. It’s common for classes to include girls as young as 4 and as old as 75, and of all fitness levels.

Zumba ® fitness is structured in a way that allows you to gradually increase the intensity level as the weeks pass and your fitness improves. The moves can also be modified for those who have injuries to look after.

Starting a new dance class is like starting any other program of physical activity: check with your doctor first and let the teacher know, especially if you have back and joint problems, are very overweight or unfit, or are pregnant.

I’ve never danced in my life. Can I do it?

Give it a try! Zumba ® fitness moves are so simple, you can pick them up just by watching and copying – but we break them down and explain them too. You’ll find dancing improves your co-ordination, posture, grace and flexibility.

What should I wear/bring?

Wear comfortable, stretchy clothing that doesn’t restrict your movement. Dance pants, gym pants, yoga pants or leggings are recommended for the bottom half so that the teacher can see what your legs and knees are doing. Avoid jeans and skirts. For the top half, t-shirts or singlets – you don’t have to bare your tummy!

Zumba ® fitness classes involve slightly higher impact, so jazz sneakers are recommended. If you don’t have any, good sneakers with non-marking soles will do. Make sure they aren’t too grippy to stop you turning.

And whichever type of dance exercise you’re doing, always bring a bottle of water.

What if I (have to) miss a class?

Due to the 10-week course structure, we cannot offer you an individual make-up class, nor credit for any missed classes. However, you are welcome to catch up by coming along to classes at other times (at any location, provided there is space).

Where are the classes held?

There are currently two venues for Zumba: Chatswood and Rozelle.

“Zumba was so much fun. And the belly dancing – you are such an awesome teacher! It was great to be back in a proper dance class! So many people who say they teach belly dancing, it’s all just mucking around .. it was so great to learn technique in a comfortable environment. Can’t wait til next week!”

“I’ve been doing Zumba at the gym. It’s good, it helps fitness and bone density, but it’s also frustrating. At the gym, the music is hideous and blaring! And the moves are repetitive.
“Which is why I came to your class. I love your choreography! You understand music and dance – not just fitness – the fitness is there, but it’s integrated into the music. Fitness and bone density are important for me (I’ve got osteopenia), but what I love is music and dance.
“The level was perfect. Not everything was easy, I had to think about it. And I noticed you subtly encouraging me to do more intensity. Higher knee lifts were hard to do! but I’ll work on it. Good to have mastery, and also good to have a challenge. So thanks for a great class!”
