Chances are, if you invest in your health and wellness, you will recover your investment and more through savings in medications, doctor’s visits, fad diets, complicated eating plans and supplements, ineffective treatments, as well as increased productivity and fewer sick days for both you and your family.
Health coaches work to empower people to live their most fit lives. To that end, a health coach:
A health coach helps bridge the gap between basic information and knowledge-based implementation. Health coaches gain expertise in nutritional and physiological sciences, how to use screening and assessment measures, and how to design and implement programs. They thoroughly understand their legal, professional and ethical responsibilities and are aware of other professionals to whom to refer for situations outside of the health coach’s scope of practice.
A health coach helps clients discover the larger reason for change: to circumvent disease, to have more energy, to reduce the effects of stress, to enjoy leisure activities, or perhaps to overcome a physical setback or condition. When clients are faced with challenges, it is common to lose sight of the “why” of health-behaviour change. At these times, a health coach can remind clients about their big picture intentions and help them navigate through obstacles.
Health coaches value their clients and champion their results. Unlike a friend or family member, whose interests may overlap with the client’s, a health coach offers nonjudgmental support and encouragement and allows clients to be experts in their own lives. Health coaches use proven strategies for effective communication to build rapport, listen actively, ask powerful questions and promote self-efficacy. From this place of trust and connection, clients are free to learn, explore, experiment and gain insight in their quest for greater health and well-being.
A health coach helps clients discern what is most important to them. Health coaches respect each individual’s unique history and perspective, and helps clients choose options to optimize their success. Health coaches work with a range of client goals, whether clients wish to consume more fruits and vegetables, start a walking program or run a marathon. Health coaches help clarify intentions and generate step-by-step action strategies. Once goals and action plans are in place, health coaches serve as a powerful accountability partner to support clients’ desired outcomes.
From exercise programming and nutritional guidance to support and motivation, health coaches take a holistic approach to working one-on-one and understand the science behind true behaviour modification. With a focus on enhancing, preserving and maintaining health, and preventing illness, health coaches understand the emotional, physical, behavioural, and nutritional and lifestyle factors that are needed to enhance overall health and well-being.
One of the most important things a health coach does is work to establish a bond built on genuineness, respect and trust with every client. To allow for a successful and effective coach-client relationship, health coaches establish an understanding of the psychological, behavioural and emotional needs and characteristics of you as an individual. That understanding begins by identifying your unique fitness personality through open communication and active listening.
With an understanding your fitness personality and your personal interests, past successes and failures, your attitudes and beliefs about health and fitness, and your readiness to change, a health coach will work with you to establish SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) goals. Through this effective approach, which helps you establish both short- and long-term goals that are continually revisited, a health coach will help you to take vague ideas and aspirations and transform them into reality.
Health coaches helps clients establish positive self-talk (the things we tell ourselves) by identifying negative, irrational and erroneous beliefs. By becoming aware of situations where negative self-talk occurs, including times when you may say to yourself, “I hate doing this exercise,” health coaches help you shift to a more accurate and positive way of thinking. By listening and applying their expertise, they help you transform your self-talk to thoughts like, “This exercise is challenging, but I know I can do it!”
From lack of time to financial constraints, inclement weather, injury or medical issues, there are a number of environmental and lifestyle factors that often serve as external barriers to people trying to lose weight or improve their overall health. Coupled with internal barriers such as low self-esteem and intimidation about exercising in front of others, a health coach will work with you to diffuse anxieties and identify misconceptions that may be standing in the way of you reaching your goals. Although obstacles are inevitable, with the right systems in place a health coach will arm you with the skills you need to cope with current and future barriers and provide you with strategies to help you get back on track following temporary slip ups.
While this may seem counterintuitive, the ultimate goal of a health coach is to help you to become self-reliant to increase your motivation to adopt healthy habits. From helping you create or maintain an environment that fosters success to finding and implementing a support system, a health coach is committed to arming you with the tools you need to succeed in reaching your goals.
Health coaches enable individuals to see the value in reaching their health-related goals and building a true connection between exercise and activities of daily living. A health coach will empower you to take ownership of your experience and create positive, lasting lifestyle changes that enhance what you do in the gym and in everyday life.
A health coach is a health promoter and educator, and active partner in helping clients make healthy lifestyle choices.
People who suspect they have or have been diagnosed with mental health issues are advised to see a trained counsellor or psychologist.
