Nature Retreats

The trees are full of birds including King parrots, Lorikeets, Rosellas, Kookaburras, Wagtails, Cockatoos, Bell Birds & Whip Birds and during the day it is a chorus of nature.

Huge sandstone rocks rise up from around the Billabong and the cabins and retreat centre perch on the escarpment, nesting in the trees overlooking the lotus garden.

If you are up early you will spot Black Wallabies, Blue Tongue & Monitor Lizards and if you are up late you can see Ring tail Possums, Sugar Gliders and micro bats.

At night the bush hums gently to the sound of Cicadas & frogs until the sun rises gently over the property, the lotus flowers blossom and the cycle starts again.

Billabong Retreat is an Eco nature Tourism retreat certified by Eco Tourism Australia and is also a TAAl accredited Australian Quality Tourism Business and holder of a Department of Environment Eco-pass for running guided tours into the Wollemi National Park.

Getting there

Located less than an hour’s drive from Sydney at Maraylya, near Windsor, Billabong Retreat is an eco-certified bush haven that offers yoga, meditation and mindfulness retreats (two to six days). The all-inclusive programme includes accommodation, organic vegetarian meals and a gentle, meditative style of yoga that links the body, breath and mind.

From Sydney, follow the M2 north of the Harbour Bridge, continuing onto the M7. Turn off at Old Windsor Road and travel towards Windsor for 15km. Take the Boundary Road turnoff towards Maraylya; the retreat is located on McClymont Road, off Maguire Road.

Environmental Credentials

We are a fully certified eco-retreat so we take our impact on the environment very seriously. We are self sufficient for water and waste disposal and operate a bio-pod worm farm waste water system. It is very important that only biodegradable waste is put down the toilets and sinks. Water is restricted to 50 litres of rain water per person per day. With short showers this amount is ample. We also have a solar hot water heating system and a grid connected photovoltaic electricity generating system. We aim to minimise recycling and landfill waste and we compost all our food waste.

Paul designed and built the retreat centre and is director of all the retreat programs.

After a fifteen year stint in corporate world promoting fizzy drinks, toys, cigarettes and alcohol, Paul experienced a business failure and found himself sitting on a Thai island licking his wounds and pondering what life was all about. By fate, there was a health retreat one hundred metres down the beach and Paul found himself absorbed within its energy, ideas and people, particularly with regard to yoga.

On return to Australia Paul was trained by Michael de Manicor, Director at the Yoga Institute, previous President of Yoga Australia and psychologist. This followed the teachings of Krishnamacharya, one of the most authentic sources of classical yoga teachings this century and source of ancient wisdom about the mind & body connection. Paul completed a two-tear advanced teacher training qualification and has since been inspired by many other brilliant teachers including Jon Kabatt-Zinn Phd, Daniel Siegel MD, Bruce Lipton Phd, Stephen Hawking Phd, Sir David Attenborough, Jane Goodhall, Brian Cox, Mark Whitwell, Eckhart Tolle, the Buddah, Jesus, S.N. Goenka, his three young children, wife and the thousands of amazing human beings that come to Billabong Retreat.

Paul’s teachings at Billabong Retreat combine ancient wisdom with modern scientific thinking. They are not affiliated with any particular organisation or religion but instead a summary of the experiences and knowledge that Paul has acquired in his varied life. They explore how changes such as language, the agricultural and industrial revolutions and the very recent informational and technological mega-revolutions are reshaping modern human experience like never before.

Ancient fields of study include the Yoga Sutras, the Yamas (Universal moralities), Niyamas (personal observances), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing), Pratyahara (senses), Dharana (focus), Dhyana (absorption) & Samadhi (bliss) and modern areas include mindfulness, breath and body work, the mind body connection, meditation, consciousness, neuro-plasticity, epigenetics, meta-cognition, emotional intelligence, the stress response and energetic fields.

Understandably, Paul is not a world leader in any of these fields of study and does not have formal qualifications in them, but instead has distilled that the message from all these teachings is fundamentally the same and can be learnt by anyone with a little effort, an appropriate teacher and some fun.

Some of the simple techniques that Paul teaches, if practised daily for 15 minutes, will help any human being life a longer and happier life. All Paul’s programs teach to connect body, mind and breath, and how to avoid being dazzled by the many senses of modern human consciousness, especially thought.

Paul’s programs involve physical movement, attention & awareness, breath exercises many types of seated meditation, summary’s of the peer reviewed modern science and presentations on the application of these skills at home and in the workplace. Everyone is welcome to contribute as we all have something to learn from everyone else.
