“Whether or not we hear it, everything has a sound, a vibration all its own,”-Joshua Leeds
Sound Healing, through various techniques and technologies, is the educated and conscious use of the energy of sound to reach identified goals and promote wellness in the human system – including the expansion of consciousness. Sound Healing is founded on the premise that all matter is vibrating at specific frequencies. Science has proven that sound, or vibration, has a strong impact upon substance. Many ancient civilizations and modern indigenous cultures have used sound to heal and access higher levels of consciousness for thousands of years.
There are a wide range of techniques that utilize sound as a tool for change. The most common and basic use of sound is for meditation and relaxation. Chanting, toning and overtone singing are some of the most powerful methods for resonating sound throughout the body. The use of nature sounds and natural instruments, such as crystal bowls and tuning forks, have specific healing frequencies and harmonics. Drumming and rhythm are now used by corporations to release stress and build team consciousness. Sound is now being using by clinical psychologists to help children with certain learning disabilities. Binaural beat frequencies are used to entrain people into very specific states of consciousness. Sound is used to alter brainwave states to help people with sleep disorders and facilitate creative expression. Listening to one’s own root frequency enables an individual to create a more centred and grounded awareness within their life. The technique called Bio-Tuning uses root frequencies and binaural beats, played back through a sound table, to entrain people into specific brainwave states. Sound and music are also used to help with difficult life transitions, including birth and death. The medical community also uses sound and music in a variety of applications such as: during surgery to relieve pain, to break up gall stones and to relax muscles using ultrasound. Doctors are now finding the resonant frequency of organs in order to help vibrate them back into a healthy state. Perhaps most exciting is cutting-edge research that shows how sound might be used to disintegrate diseases such as cancer.
Sound Healing can be transmitted to a person in a number of ways:-
1) Through using their own voice
2) Through using their voice with other voices
3) Through using their own voice while listening to music
4) Through listening to another person’s voice or a number of voices
5) Through listening to an instrument or instruments
6) Through listening to music or sound through a loudspeaker or through headphones
What can sound heal?
Using sound as therapy can provide results for a variety of issues including:
How does it work?
Each organism has its own vibratory rate. Every object in the universe has its own unique resonant frequency. Tap a wineglass and it will emit a ringing sound determined by its size, shape and the thickness.
When an opera singer vibrates a glass with her voice the singer has matched her voice to the resonant frequency of the glass and set it into vibration. As the singer increases the volume of her sound the resonance becomes too great for the forces that hold the glass together and it shatters.
In air sound travels at 340 metres per second.
In water sound travels at 1,500 metres per second.
In glass sound travels at 5,600 metres per second.
The human body is made up of 70% water; this makes it a very good conductor of sound.
Modern medicine now uses sound waves to break up kidney and gallstones in the body. The machine used is called a Lithotripter. This machine bombards the stones with a specific sound frequency for one to two hours. The patient is admitted in the morning and discharged in the evening. Generally no anaesthetic is needed. With most patients only one treatment is necessary to break the stones down. The pulverised stone is passed out of the body through the urine.
Every organ, every bone, every cell in the body has its own resonant frequency. Together they make up a composite frequency like the instruments of an orchestra. When one organ in the body is out of tune it will affect the whole body.
Through the principle of resonance it is possible to use sound to bring the body back into harmony hence avoiding the need for drugs or surgery.
Sound helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our fluctuating brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwave can attune to. By using rhythm and frequency, we can entrain our brainwaves and it then becomes possible to down-shift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (meditative state) and delta (sleep; where internal healing can occur).
This same concept is utilized in meditation by regulating the breath, but with sound it’s the frequency that is the agent which influences the shift.
